The Savvy Caregiver training was originally developed as a multi-session, live presentation by researchers at the University of Minnesota. It was shown in a major university research study to reduce caregiver distress (Hepburn et al., 2007). It has also been designated as one of the approved dementia training programs of the Alzheimer's Disease Demonstration Grants to States (ADDGS) program, which is funded through the U.S. Administration on Aging.
Throughout all four programs, you'll see short interview segments with other family caregivers—people who have come before you and have experienced all phases of dementia caregiving. They truly understand your perspective and candidly share the wisdom they have gained.
You will learn the basics about dementia, how dementia affects thinking skills, your new role as a "caregiver," and effective ways to respond to changes in the behavior of your loved one.
You will learn how confusion impacts behavior, how to reduce stress and take care of yourself, and how taking charge and providing a structured environment can make things easier.
You will learn about the stages of dementia decline, how to estimate your loved one's level, and how to choose appropriate activities to help minimize confusion for your loved one.
You will learn how to "right size" any activity based on the remaining strengths of your loved one and how to change the support and structure you provide as the disease progresses.
